CLISP on Digital Unix 4.0B

Hello All,

I am attempting to get CLISP compiled/made on a DU 4.0B system with
patch kit 8 installed.

I am using CLISP package developed by Bruno Haible and Micheal Stoll,
both in Germany. I got the version clisp-1998-09-09, looks like the newest.

Anyhow, in the package it says that it will run on a DU 4.0B
system. The release notes however suggest one install GCC, which
I have no desire to do.

Anyhow, I tried just making CLISP with the DU 4.0B CC compiler
and followed the directions. Things seemed to go well until I
get to a step where you run a script call makemake.

What a concept "Make a Makefile" <GRIN>

makemake bombs and says that I cannot use a Pre_ANSI C compiler?

Anyone with any thoughts/suggestions/ideas about this. Your help is
greatly appreciated. I will summarize.

BTW, we had an older dist of CLISP running on this machine (vintage 1995)
compiled on OSF/1 3.2B. It broke, probally been for a longtime.
