Hi all
I am in the processing of moving to a new job, but I still need access
to my Dec Alpha machine with DU 4.0D running CDE, in order to finish my
Ph.D.
I need to be able to run graphical stuff, emacs and ABAQUS, I subscribed
to a on-line provider (freeserve) to be able to log in to my machine. It
is too expensive to phone up to the machine, a national rate call
prices. I am using a NT machine to run Exceed and a 56K modem to connect
to the on-line provider.
I have two problems, and I think both are related.
I can telnet up to the Dec Alpha, but while doing so a window appears
from another UNIX machine on the network asking me to login. ( found a
similar problem posted by Robert L. McMillin but no solution). If I shut
that window down, the Alpha does not want to display anything like emacs
on my NT machine, errors like unable to open host. If the window is left
open in the background then the display section works.
Which leads to the second problem, the machine will display the various
windows, but as soon as anything is typed, the connection with the modem
and the provider goes quiet, the connection is still open, but no data
is being transfered between the NT machine or the Alpha. Looking at the
modem lights and dial up network icon on the task bar on the NT machine
both are quiet.
I have tried this from a RAS system that the University runs, and it
appears to work fine, no strange windows, and ABAQUS runs fine if a bit
slow.
I think the on-line provider should be able to handle this, but I have
also e-mailed them to ask.
Any help would be appreciated to resolve this.
Thanks in advance
Grant
