Hi, I asked the following:

I had two responses, from

"Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-884-0646" <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
Mike D Cross <crossmd_at_mh.uk.sbphrd.com>

which basically agreed with the above. As it turns out, I had to help my
'collegue' out over the phone before I saw either response, and it turned
out as I expected.

The procedure we used was:

Boot the CD
cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV re0 # or your favourite device
cd /etc; mkdir fdmns; cd fdmns; mkdir root_dmn; cd root_dmn
ln -s /dev/re0a re0a
mount root_dmn#root /mnt

copy files as needed from where needed. restore from backup etc.

Tom Blinn's response contained this 'gem':

>You might let your friend do the bulk of the work as a "learning experience"
>to reduce the likelihood of a future incident :^)

Hi Tom, I remember you from my Digital days ...
