Hi All ,
A whole load of people advised me not to mix the CPUs .
Digital however were ardamant that they could be mixed .
Originally the second CPU showed up for the first 2 boots
        then disappeared .

        I had built the kernel/sizer -n/boot genvmunix etc .

        show conf showed :

CPU0 F B2040-AB Decchip (TM) 21164-5
CPU1 F B2040-AA Decchip (TM) ?????-?

I ran the clear_error CPU0 / CPU1
That cleared the errors but still left the question marks .

I did a cold start of the system and that gave me

CPU0 P B2040-AB Decchip (TM) 21164-5
CPU1 P B2040-AA Decchip (TM) 21164-1

After that the system could once again see the
        second CPU .

Thanks to all those who offered advice .

Thanking you ,
