it was all my fault... :-)
This is what was happening: I am working under bash, so the "which"
command does not exist as such, but as a csh script /usr/bin/which. Now,
when this script invoked the csh shell, my .cshrc was read, and it
seems that it contained an if...then... statement that csh did not like
very much. It is solved now.
