I received a response from the original author (thanks Jim) for how to
correct this problem, so I'll post it here for any future admins who fall
into this trap and use archives of this list to find solutions.
To fix :
1. shutdown -h now
2. >>>boot -fl s (boot with single-user mode)
3. /sbin/bcheckrc
4. cd /etc/auth/system
5. cp ttys ttys.save
cp devassign devassign.save
cp .new..ttys ttys
cp .new..devassign devassign
cp ttys.db ttys.db.old
rm ttys.db
6. cd /usr/tcb/bin
7. ./convauth -dt (it creates ttys.db file)
8. reboot or ctrl'D
And to get myself out of the smoke and jump into the fire, I'm off to
install the Super Patch #6 :)
Damien.
