Thanks to all who answered: Dr. Tom Blinn (of course), Mark Huehls,
Mandell Degerness, and Don Rye.
But the prize goes to Aideen McConville of Persimmon IT and Dave
Korzekwa of Los Alamos National Laboratory who both pointed out
(within a few minutes of each other) that the installation of DU does
not tell you that you need both 75 DPI and 100 DPI fonts installed for
the S3 Trio card. The 100 DPI fonts really are optional. They are only
mandatory when resolution increases from 1024 to 1280. (Why would I
want to run at 1024 if my display will support a higher resolution?
Grumble, grumble.)
I installed the full OSFFONT15410 and away it went!
I have since upgraded to a better card and am running at 1600x1200,
but that requires the 100 DPI fonts, too.
I would never have expected that the lack of fonts would produce a
black screen, but that is the symptom.
Once again, many thanks to all of those who helped!
