[Q] CHMOD problem

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange problem with CHMOD that I probably should know how to
solve, but don't. I'm still learning.

The Problem:

A user recently complained that they were unable to set the execute bit on
a script they wrote by using CHMOD. I tested this with my own login and
confirmed that what they said is true.

For example, if I write a script called "testscript", I am unable to set
the execute bit in the user group using "chmod 700 testscript". The result
is -rw------- instead of -rwx------.

Permissions on "chmod" in /usr/bin are:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 24576 Nov 15 1996 chmod

Permissions on "chmod" in /sbin are:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 24576 Nov 15 1996 chmod

Interestingly, I *can* use CHMOD to *remove* the execute bit from the user
group.

We're running DU4.0b without any patches. CHMOD used to work before the
upgrade, so is this something that needs to be patched???

As always, your help is appreciated.

Debby
