     Dear All

     Many thanks to all those who responded so quickly.

     My original problem was that my 1200 had a default keyboard setting of
     US-English with a pcxal keyboard. This meant that the pipe and back
     slash symbol on by UK-English keyboard did not respond.

     As many people explained, the solution is to set the language variable
     at the chevrons prompt ie.

>>> set language 38

     Then reboot.

     This gives you English/Irish. To see the available options type:

>>> set language <any_old_rubbish>

     Once you CDE has started, you can go to the cde toolbox, select
     desktop-apps, select keycaps icon. This will bring up a screen
     allowing you to select the correct language and keyboard type. Having
     done this, add /usr/dt/bin/dxkeyboard -load to your .profile to
     restore the chosen settings.

     Many thanks to: Roger Picard, Will Flett, Richard Bembrose and Paul
     Watson for such prompt replies.

     Nick
