Hi All
I would just like to say a big thanx to Digital for writing salvage
for advfs! It works great and it's a life saver!
But...
it would be nice if you could specify salvage to output the files
via stdout in say a tar format, that you could then pipe to dd and
onto a tape, or even thru rsh to another machines disk or tape.
I say this because, often, you won't have that much diskspace
free on the machine that you are salvaging on ( in our case we were
lucky to have another 6GB free ), but in general, there is probably
a tape device or some spare disk floating about on your net that
could be used. In our case, that machine had a DLT on it, which would
have been just fine to throw the files onto.
Just a thought that occured to us as our freespace got down to 200M.
We also noticed that when we salvaged the ingres files, the
ingres_log file, which is a file created with mknod c major minor to
point to the major and minors of the device containing the ingres raw
log file, the salvaged file got the majors and minors *WAY* wrong!
Just something else we noticed after ingres failed to come up,
saying that the log file was corrupt ( not good for ones sanity at
3am! )
Cheers
Brenden
