256MB limit on Dec UNIX 4.0D ?

Has anyone else out there heard of a 256MB memory limit when
installing (NOT upgrading) Dec UNIX 4.0D ? My suppliers (of an Aspen
Systems Alpha-clone) claim that the kernel won't compile with more than
256MB of memory.
