to kill the unkillable

Twice in one day I need help already.

One of my 4100's decided that it was going to stop exporting
to NFS so in desperation I tried to HUP and then kill -9
the nfsd but the little daemon just would not go away.
I have encountered these unkillables before on DU but have
managed a workaround, this time a mixture of desperation
and fatigue got the better of me and the size 11 hobnail
was applied.

All is now well once more but for future reference there
has to be a better way - I guess, would someone let me
in on the secret.

TIA
