Setting LCD window message

Does anyone recall the way to set the message in the little LCD
window on the face of Alpha servers? I've been told it's done
from the boot (console) prompt, but there doesn't appear to be
any reference to it in the installation manual. If there's a
manual we're missing, the name of the one which contains this
information would be appreciated.
