Original question:
I am about to upgrade to an AlpahServer 1000A/533 to DU4.0D from DU4.0B and
am wondering about updating the firmware first. This is something I have
not done in the past.
I have created a bootable floppies with the V5.1 firmware updates, as
described at:
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/alpha1000a.html#method_3
The instructions say to:
Insert the floppy and boot it from the SRM console:
P00>>> boot dva0
Is the SRM console the >>> prompt I get when I shutdown the system?
Are there any gotchas or do I simply boot the floppy, type the update
command, exit and then upgrade to DU4.0D?

Summary of responses:
yes indeed, the SRM console is the >>> prompt you get when you shutdown and
halt the system.
DO NOT interrupt the process once it starts (and hope the power doesn't
fail). It has never happened to me, but I have heard horror stories about
the results.
Basically:
--- shutdown and halt
--->>>boot dva0
--- follow prompts, do the update
--->>> turn the machine off, wait a minute or so, turn on again
