Hello fellow AlphaServer Managers:

We recently put into production, an AS 8200. The primarily use of this
system is data analysis by the graduate and faculty researchers here at
Temple University. Some of the researchers have huge sets of data. Some of
these data files, when not compressed, take up as much as 30 Gig of space
for a single file. These data files involve everything from biological and
chemical modeling, accounting, census, and so on.

What we are looking for is a cost-effective way to provide our researchers
with enough storage on our AS 8200 to meet their needs. We are considering
a number of alternatives such as writing their data files to CDs and than
making them available via a CD-ROM jukebox, doing the same thing, but with
DVDs, acquiring a heck of a lot more regular disk storage, and maybe even
streaming some data from tape (we do have a TZ812 jukebox) or some
combination of these approaches.

I am wondering what others in this situation are doing to accommodate such
needs. If you have any suggestions or observations to me, please let me
know and I will summarize in a few days.

Thank you
