Hi,
I've been asked to install Oracle8 on an Alphaserver 800 5/400,
something I've never done before. Disk is configured into a RAID5 set
controlled by a SWXCR. I've just started to read the installation docs
and it says one of the requirements is:
Disk Drives At least 4 devices: one for Oracle software and 3 for
creating an OFA-compliant database
with further comments recommending the use of more smaller drives that
less bigger ones for performance and fault tolerance - fair enough...
Later it says I can use a single mount point or three mount points on
the same drive though that isn't recommended. Now, since I have limited
disk (and funds :-), the disk I have is under RAID and this is for
educational use (ie NOT production), I'm happy enough to install into
one 'mount point'. Question is - what do Oracle really mean by a mount
point? Are they expecting a discrete partition? Can/should I create
mountpoints and perform file-on-file mounts and if so how? Can I just
specify a directory as the 'mount point' and have it install everything
there? (as long as I'm not using raw devices I don't see it makes much
difference does it?).
Any comments/help/experiences much appreciated, thanks,
Simon
