tz88+hsz70=64k block size limit?

Hi all,

We recently deployed an AlphaServer 4100 running Digital UNIX 4.0D
connected through KZPSAs to several HSZ70 controllers, which are driving
ESA1000 cabinets.

Attached to one of the HSZs, we've got a TZ88 configured as a passthrough
unit, as documented in the HSZ manuals. The problem is this: since
setting the tape up like this, we're only able to write to it in blocks
<= 64k. In our previous setup, we had the same TZ88 directly attached
to a plain BA356 shelf, and could write in blocks of 512k (probably
more.) Our database folks believe the 64k limit is slowing their backups
down unreasonably.

Is there a reason for the 64k limit (something HSZ specific, maybe?) or
a way around it? Compaq support keeps passing me between the hardware
and software side of the house.

Thanks all,
-Bill
