Hello,
I am relatively new to Digital UNIX having spent most of my career
working with VMS. My reading of the documentation concerning the
addition of new users, placement in groups, establishing HOME
directories, setting passwords, and restricting access methods and
times, suggests that all of this must be done with
/usr/bin/X11/dxaccounts - a very slow process if you have lots of
accounts to administer. Surely, there must be a way to create and
delete accounts with scripts and still utilize C2 security. Under
VMS, I developed DCL scripts which created unique usernames and
established the account. I also had DCL scripts to remove users and
remove their mail accounts. I would like to have the same
functionality with UNIX. I would appreciate any help that you may be
able to offer.
On a related issue, under UNIX, users are retired rather than removed
from the system. This implies that I cannot assign usernames again
even if the individual with the older username has left the
institution. Again, I understand that there are security implications
but I assume that other institutions reuse usernames quite regularly.
Again, I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you for your help and your patience.
Bill
