How to get a crash dump from an Alphaserver 400

We have an alphaserver 400 running DU 4.0D which periodically hangs and
has to be rebooted. It logs *NOTHING* in any logs, error or otherwise.

I left a procedure for the tech-on-call to use to try to get a crash dump:

        - press reset
        - press ctrl-p when it starts to boot, till you get a boot prompt
        - enter:
>>> crash

They tried it today, and the system came back with a message that said
something
like:
        kernel stack not valid; halt; boot failure

and came back to the ">>>" prompt. I thought this was the correct procedure
to do this - am I wrong? Can anyone suggest any things to do or look at to
try to diagnose the problem????

TIA!
