I posted a query yesterday (original shown at end of this text) RE
replacement of advfs utilities when upgrading from 4.0d to 4.0e.

I received responses from the following - almost immediately:

Franc Carter [franc_at_mml.usyd.edu.au]
Lavelle, Bryan [Bryan.Lavelle_at_COMPAQ.com]
N.M.Hill_at_rl.ac.uk
Olle Eriksson [olle_at_cb.uu.se]

Kevin Jones [Kevin.Jones_at_hamilton.co.uk]
Chad Price [cprice_at_molbio.unmc.edu]
Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-884-0646 [tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com]
Tom Webster [webster_at_ssdpdc.lgb.cal.boeing.com]
Grant Van Dyck [vandyck_at_zk3.dec.com]

The consensus is YES - delete the advfs utilities before the update, do the
update, install the new version then add the patch kit. I have included
Grant's response as it adds some value about specific versions.

Yes, you will need to do that to be current. When you do the
updateinstall, it will prompt you that those layered products are
installed and will need to be reinstalled after you are done. The only
way to reinstall those is to first remove their predecessors.

We usually ship updated versions of the advfs utilities with every
release - to pick up the latest fixes/enhancements and to ensure that
they run correctly with the release they are packaged with. Some of
these tools use threads libraries and will not function if the OS and
UTIL versions do not match. This is particularly true for the 4.0E
release as we did some restructuring of library locations in support of
these tools.

Quick question...

I am going to upgrade an 8400 tonight from DUNIX V4.0D (no patch kits) to
V4.0e + pk2 - this is a pre-requisite to upgrading to EV6 cpu's (not
tonight).

One question, a colleague suggested that, after doing the 4.0e upgrade I
should do the following:

1. delete (setld -d) the advfs utilities stuff (shown below)
AFAADVANCED425 Advanced File System Advanced Utilities
AFAADVDAEMON425 Advanced File System Daemon
AFAADVGUI425 Advanced File System Graphical User Interface
AFAADVMAN425 Advanced File System Advanced Utilities Reference Pages

2. Install the latest version of this kit

3. Install patch kit 2

blah, blah, blah

I cant see anything in the docs to indicate that I need to do steps 1 & 2
before installing the patch kit. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Thanks - Tony
