raw devices

The raw devices are available as soon as you boot your system. So you don't
need special initialization to use it. In fact, you just use it as
'/dev/rrzc8b' as datafile (in Oracle's vocabulary) instead of
'/u01/sybase/...'.

I don't know Sybase (I know Oracle) but I recommend you to investigate LSM
volumes (don't mind if to use RAID or not) as raw devices because it has
advanteges against Unix partitions. For example, your disk supports only 7
"raw devices" (partitions a to h), meanwhile with LSM you can define
hundreds of "raw devices" (volumes) in the same disk. I use this feature
with Oracle databases and it works fine.
