Does too much memory harm?

Hi,

my Alpha164 PC board has a jumper for switching between 128 and 256 bit
memory bus width. For 128bit only 4 sockets are filled with SIMMs,
for 256 bit all 8 have to be filled.

Question: is it possible to have the board configured to 128 bit
but have all sockets filled? Of course the upper 4 SIMMs will not be
used; but could they do any harm, will they confuse the board?

Thanks,
