Thanks to everyone for your help!

It turns out there was some illegal format in my passwd file, and I just
copied the good passwd file over the bad ones. I also needed to de-select
(from the Options -> General menu) 'Allow Duplicate User ID's' checkbox.
(from Lisa Kim at Compaq)

I am using Basic security (not enhanced) with about 30 users.

I had many great suggestions from:
Michal Bucholtz
Bobbi Spitzig
John Losey
John Nebel
Lucio Chiapetti
Lisa Kim

I really appreciate your time and support.

Other suggestions included:
1) Install latest patches
2) Check/modify the uid parameter in the /.sysman/Account_defaults file
3) Check 'setld -i' for installed X resources, uninstall and reinstall
OSFXADMIN425
4) Use NIS on one server only
