hello managers,
Stan Horwitz suggested to path my system to at least patch kit #3 because
of Y2K problems. i didn't do that yet.
Roger Leonard has the permissions 755 on the index-dirs. we got 700, but
all daemons run with root-priviliges and so permissions shouldn't be the
problem.
John Ziomek installed the patched releases of 5.5.1. we already installed
the patch and now have 5.5.1.Build.143 Turbo/4. the problem remained.
Tom Webster suggested to add 'localhost' to the servers resource-file
on the client and the server. i'll try that now and see what happended
in the next morning.
Tom also wrote, that only the bootstrap information are not saved.
apart from disaster recovery everything should work.
Regine Polnick pointed out, that nsrim is started after every savegroup
run. when several groups end at the same time, conflicts might appear.
She had 3 clever ideas:
i) not saving in so many groups. (which we do.)
ii) starting savegroup with option '-x'
iii) creating a dummy savegroup-script and starting nsrim by cron weekly.
additionally most people said, that networker seems quite buggy in the
5.5 and 5.2 release, which is rather disappointing.

my original question was:
< dear managers,
<
< we are backing up a few few alphas running digital unix 4.0d with
< networker 5.5.1.Build.143 Turbo/4. the alphas are not patched. since the
< upgrade of networker we get lots of messages like the following in
< /nsr/logs/daemon.log ->
<
< 01/25/00 23:19:23 nsrindexd: session start error for
< gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de: 13 01/25/00 23:19:23 savegrp:
< gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de:bootstrap failed. *
< gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de:bootstrap 1 retry attempted *
< gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de:bootstrap save: SYSTEM error, Permission
< denied * gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de:bootstrap save: Cannot opensave
< session with gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de 01/25/00 23:19:23 savegrp:
< gretchen.pz-oekosys.uni-kiel.de:bootstrap will retry 4 more time(s)
<
< there is a lot data written to tape and we are unsure what the
< consequences of the above errors are since we could recover data fromthe
< concerned savegroups.
<
< we would like to know, what the problem is and where we might get some
< help. we only bought 'upgrade-support' and legato refuses to answer
< technical questions.
