Can't install software after installing non-reversible patches

I seem to have run into a 'chicken vs. egg' problem. On a DU4.0F system we
installed the patch kit #1. For reasons I won't go into we did NOT make the
patches reversible. We then had to go back and install the software
development subset using setld. A message comes up saying that we need to
de-install patch # something_or_other, then install the software, then
re-install the patch. Makes sense.

Except when we go to deinstall the patch using dupatch it can't because
there's nothing in /usr/var/patch/backup. (Presumably because we said no to
reversible.) So,... I can't install the software because I can't deinstall
the patch.

Nasty situation. Any suggestions?

thanks,

Chris
