Dear list,
our AS2000 5/300s running 4.0f + patchkit 2, with DE500-BAs ('uerf -R -r
300' says DECchip 21143: Revision: 3.0) do not send an ARP-broadcast when we
do 'ifconfig tu0 alias IP' in 100Mbit mode. This causes routing problems.
When I run 'tcpdump arp' on the same net as the AS2000 nodes, I see no 'arp
who-has IP tell IP' from the AS2000 when performing 'ifconfig alias'. The
other nodes on the net (DS20s, older AS-machines) perform 'arp who-has IP
tell IP' immediately when 'ifconfig alias' is applied. The network setup is
similar on all machines. In 10 Mbit mode however (ewa0_mode = 'Twisted
pair') ARP-broadcast works perfectly!
I know that earlier DE500s had a bug that caused malformed or missing
ARP-broadcasts, but this is the latest version of the DE500s as far as I
know. The machines are using ewa0_mode setting of 'Fast', 100Mbit half
duplex - auto sense is not used.
The machines are connected to a Cisco (2500 series) switch, and the
'spanning tree fast-start' feature is turned on on the related switch ports
(Compaq in Norway has suggested that this might be the cause of the problem,
since the DE500s take the link down and up during 'ifconfig alias').
Anyone seen this before? Suggestions?
