broken 100mbps ethernet?

I have an AlphaStation 200 4/233. I recently installed
a DEC 21140 based pci 10/100 ethernet card.

I have been trying to get this card to communicate on a
100mbps hub for a couple of days now. I am positive that the
cables and hub are working perfectly. The problem is with the
AlphaStation, the NIC, or the software (driver).

The NIC appears to ifconfig up, but when I try to ping another
host on the network, the transmit light on the hub never flashes
as it should.

Here are a few lines from my kern.log

Feb 11 18:35:13 anomaly vmunix: tu1: DECchip 21140: Revision: 2.2
Feb 11 18:35:13 anomaly vmunix: tu1: no SROM info for selected media

ware address: <snip>
Feb 11 18:35:13 anomaly vmunix: tu1: console mode: selecting 100BaseTX

t: half duplex

Note the following line is repeated quite often throughout my
kern.log:

Feb 11 18:35:13 anomaly vmunix: tu1: no SROM info for selected media

What does this message mean? Any ideas if there is hope for this?
What other information would be helpful in diagnosing this problem?
BTW, I did set ew0b_mode to fast in SRM.

Thanks
