Adobe Acrobat Reader is very slow...

I'm running Tru64 Unix v4.0D, patch kit 3, on a 233 MHz ev4 device with
(only) 64 MBytes of physical memory. I recently downloaded and installed
the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe's web site. The
program appears to work, but it is slow to the point of being unusable. In
particular it takes a long time (20 to 30 seconds) to render a page of
text on the display.

During the time Acrobat Reader is working, CPU usage is near 100% (as
reported by top). Memory usage does not seem excessive (again using top).
I have observed this effect using both XFree86 on a Linux system and
StarNet's X-Win32 on a fast Pentium III system as X servers. At the same
time I downloaded the latest Acrobat Reader for Linux and installed that
on a 200 MHz Pentium system with 128 MBytes of RAM. It runs FAR faster
and, in fact, works just fine.

Is there something odd about the way Acrobat Reader works on Tru64 Unix
that causes it to consume an unreasonable amount of processor time? What
should I be looking at to identify the cause of this problem more
precisely? Right now Acrobat Reader is unusable on my Tru64 system and I'd
like to fix that if possible.
