remote printer using lpr/lpd over a SLIP line Question

We have our system connected to a linux (kernel 2.2.6) system which is our
remote printer (via a SLIP phone line). What happens when the phone line
goes down during a job transmission? Will lpd/lpr pick up where it left off
and how long will it wait before it releases what it has to the printer if
the
line doesn't come up right away (or will it wait until the full job is
received)?

We had a strange happening yesterday, but I'm not sure it has anything
to do with lpr/lpd/unix or linux (might be our DBMS application). Trying
to rule out potential problems at this point.

Thanks
George

We are running DU 3.2c on an AS2100
