SUMMARY: Upgrading graphics card to ELSA Gloria Synergy on a XP1000

Thanks for the quick replies. The problem is now solved. Following Sean
O'Connell's advice I edited the kernel configuration file to include the
line:
    controller comet0 at pci0 slot 13
rebuilt the kernel and it worked. I note that this line is actually in the
configuration file produced by sizer, so I don't know why my previous
attempt failed. I must have slipped up. Anyway thanks to:

For the record the replies I got follow:

This is the entry I have in one of our xp1000's

controller comet0 at pci0 slot 13

You may want to nuke the /usr/sys/SYSNAME directory and the
/sys/SYSNAME symlink and then rerun

doconfig -c SYSNAME

Also, I also believe there exist some ELSA-specific patches. Make
sure you have the latest patch kit and the relevant patches.

I also add the following tweak to the end of /var/X11/Xserver.conf
(note I use xdm and not cde).

! you specify command line arguments here
args <
        -pn
        -screen0 1280x1024
        -vclass0 TrueColor
        -depth 24

I would save my old configuration file, boot the generic kernel in single
user
mode and run doconfig without using the configuration file name and let it
create a new one. You could edit the new config file if you need to make
any
custom changes that were in the old one.

Make sure you have both the 75dpi and 100dpi X fonts loaded.

The driver for the ELSA Gloria Synergy is called "comet", I have no idea
what the comment about "ingr" is, that would be something else entirely.

The "comet" driver was indeed delivered in V4.0E, so you don't need to
have any special driver. As to why you have problems building a kernel
with your new card, I don't know. But I would be sure to remove from
the system any Open3D subsets that should no longer be needed, and I'd
also make sure that I dealt with any differences between the old copy
of .product.list (updated by the Open3D install/deinstall, for example)
and the SYSNAME.list file.
