Managers,
This isn't really a question, because I found the answer in the archives,
unfortunately the answer was:
Paul had the quickest solution. He provided me with a short Perl
script that removed the bogus entry in /var/adm/utmp for the
specified user & tty name.
The summary was written by Randy Rodgers, and he was referring to a, Paul A.
Sand. If either of you are still out there (by that I mean still subscribing
to the list), can I get a copy of that perl script?
Here's what's happening:
I have a script that logs out idle users after a day of inactivity.
Monday morning I noticed a user was idle for 2 days.
She should have been logged out, so I started checking.
There were NO processes attached to the terminal OR the user.
But it didn't end there, the user logged in some time later. Her new logins
picked up the 2 day idle time, and her processes were killed the next time
cron ran my script.
This was not good since she had been only on for 3 hours.
She is currently in my exclude list because her login today is reporting 3
days idle.
I figured it was a /var/adm/utmp problem, and the archives confirmed this.
If somebody else has a better solution on removing bad entries from the utmp
file, I'd like to hear your ideas. (Otherwise I'll wait to hear from Randy
or Paul.)

UNIX is very user friendly, It's just very particular about who it makes
friends with.
