Sometimes it is very helpfull to read the f***ing RELEASE Notes.
I had to run the ECU utility and to enable VGA.
Now CDE runs fine, without any problems.

Dr. Tom Blinn:
Tru64 UNIX V5.0 *should* support the onboard VGA-Graphics on that system,BUT
you have to make sure that the graphics is configured correctly. In many of
the older EISA bus systems, if you don't update the SRM console firmware
AND update the EISA configuration database (with the ECU that isrun from a
floppy disk), then the kernel won't recognize the graphics andthings won't
work. Since the graphics was apparenly not recognized when you did the
installation (I'm assuming you didn't get a graphical installbut did it in
character cell mode), you may have to reinstall once you getthe graphics
working correctly in the console.
Niel Dyce:
The console environment variable should be set to "graphics" rather
than"serial". However you may need to run the EISA configuration utility
toenable the VGA graphics controller. This is described in the release
notesfor 4.0D which should be on the web (www.unix.digital.com), if you
don'thave a corresponding section in your copy.
Stuart McKenzie:
Well we are running CDE on a 1000 4/200 system with 4.0D and on-board Cirrus
card. I doubt if v5 is different. What you have to watch out foris that
installing 4.0D and I think 5 upsets the BIOS or whatever DEC callthe system
level and you need to use the floppy at system level to resetuse of the
cirrus card.
