Increasing avail. # of file descriptors

(System is gs140 with 8GB memory, DU4.0e.)
We are running squid on a busy webserver, and it was complaining about
running out of file descriptors. I looked at the docs, looks like we need
to change open-max-soft and open-max-hard from their defaults of 4096, but
when I tried using dxkerneltuner to set them to 8192, it said this was an
invalid value. max-vnodes is set to 851899. I'm wondering if the problem
is that (maxusers * open-max-hard) must be .LE. max-vnodes? (maxusers=4096)

Can anyone clue me in on how to tune this?

TIA...
