gimp, java 1.2.2 and jpeg library

Hello,

  I am attempting to install gimp, which I can do, but I cannot get
gimp to find the /usr/local/ version of the jpeg library which I installed
instead of the /usr/shlib jpeg java libraries. Anyone have any ideas
besides removing java and then trying to compile gimp?
