Frequently, a process that I am running in the background
becomes suspended.

the process is run using '&' to put it in the background.

after some time of running, this message is sent to stdout:
[1] + Suspended (tty output) orbixd

I see it frequently with the orbixd process but have seen
this happen with other processes as well.

The only solution that I have is to run the process in the
background and then kill the controlling terminal.

The version of unix I am running is:
        Digital UNIX V4.0D (Rev. 878); Mon Jun 21 15:04:09 PDT 1999

thanks,
mike.
