We have been using DLT drives for many years and are trying to use DLT
Compac III tapes in a TL894 tape library (4 TZ89 drives), but we are
experiencing quite a few load failures in which the tape leader comes off.
We don't seem to have this problem with DLT Compac IV tapes. The scu utility
reports the TZ89 drive firmware as 2150. The DLT Compac III tapes load fine
in our stand-alone TZ87, TZ88 and TZ89 drives. We removed the cover from a
TZ87 and TZ89 drive and watched them both load a Compac III tape.
Physically, the TZ89 has a different 'arm' which is used to make the tape
leader on the internal spool hook the leader in the tape cartridge. During
loading, the TZ89 spools the tape much faster. We noticed the tape 'buckle'
as it went over the first capstand due to being loaded too quickly. The TZ87
loads the tape much slower.
This problem is only with our tape library. Is anyone else having problems
using DLT Compac III tapes in tape libraries? Any input is appreciated. If
other sites are having this problem, then that gives me more fuel to add to
the fire under Compaq.
