Thanks go out to Frank Wortner and Jim Fitzmaurice for further info on
this subject. Included below are two responses that I found very
helpful.

Phil,
        I have a DEC 3000, Model 400 and if you run "sysconfig -q envmon" and get
the following response:

                envmon:
                env_current_temp = 2
                env_high_temp_thresh = 2
                env_fan_status = 2
                env_ps_status = 2
                env_supported = 0

The "=2" does not indicate 2 degrees Celsius, it indicates environmental
monitoring is not supported on your motherboard. If the last line "=0"
that'll confirms this. You'll have to purchase a temperature monitor from an
outside vendor that attaches to a serial port and write a little script to
talk to it. This was suggested to me on the BigBrother mailing list, I've
other machines in the computer room that do support environmental
monitoring, and can warn me of a potential heat problem, so I've never gone
that far.

I only touch base with reality on an as-needed basis!

Well, if *that* was the answer (junked overn parts :-) ), then I might be
able to point you in a slightly different direction:

http://www.phanderson.com/T_kit/overview.html

A $25 kit that can deliver temperature measurments to your computer's
serial line at 2400 baud as ASCII strings. It will save you having to
sacrifice a hapless appliance to the gods of remote temperature sensing.

Thanks for the responses... I managed to get a linux box in the room act
as a temp gauage for the duration... The kit would probably be the best
solution in the long run (next to getting a new alpha system :) )

Thanks for the replys...
