SUMMARY: .forward not .forwarding

Dumb me indeed!

Lot's of suggestions to check permissions of the file .forward.

Nothing in the path of the .forward file (the file itself or any of the
parent directories) is allowed to have group or other write access (unless
you use sendmail with the DontBlameSendmail option enabled).

Also lots of suggestions to check the mail.log (in
/var/adm/syslog.dated/{date-specific subdirectory}. Sure enough there were
lots of "Group writable directory" error messages in my log file.

I chmoded the offending upstream directory and the problem was solved.
