rewinding / nonrewinding tape devices

We've just received a new DS20 with an external Digital DLT drive

I want to be able to use the drive with tar etc, and need to know the
different device names.

It doesn't seem obvious. Where's the info?

In /devices/tape I have:
# ls -l /devices/tape/
total 0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19, 97 Apr 17 12:15 tape0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,101 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,103 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,105 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,107 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,109 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d4
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,111 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d5
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,113 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d6
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,115 Apr 17 12:15 tape0_d7
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19, 99 Apr 17 12:15 tape0c

Does the tape0c imply hardware compression and the tape0 not?

And then what about rewinding / nonrewinding?

Cheers,

All help much appreciated

either direct or to the list is fine)
