I ended up logging a call with Compaq on this issue, and in the
course of troubleshooting it over the phone, the engineer was able
to get the config to save. Through much trial and error, we discovered
that if you press Escape (Ctrl-[) followed by a *space* (not return
or tab or another Escape), it (bleeping) works. The engineer will send
out a blitz to Compaq in case further calls are logged. It's possible
this problem is fixed in a later revision of the RMC firmware, which
I believe is the source of the problem.

My original msg is below:

We just took delivery of an ES40 and I am having a strange problem
when I try to run the RCU to configure a SWXCR in the system. I am
using the RMC port, which is new to me and really seems like a nice
feature. However, when running the RCU program, I am not able to
get the config to save! I need to hit a Tab key to move to the 'yes,
I want to save the config' option, but I can't seem to get there
from here. I tried running through the console port (COM1) and various
other guesses, but the same problem comes up every time. The port seems
to treat all keystrokes as 'Enter', but only here as far as I can tell--
the Tab key works normally elsewhere.

The com1_mode param is currently set to THROUGH (the factory default),
and I suspect this is one place where the problem could be occurring,
but it's not obvious from the docs what it should be set to instead.
