Thanks to Billy Quinn for reminding me of something that I knew, but
had not needed in log enough that I had forgotten ... and for doing
it in a nice way so as to not make me feel too stupid <grin>

Billy reminded me of the environment variable
      LD_LIBRARY_PATH

When it was properly set, the program ran fine...
