How to exclude Files from Backup

Hi all,

a simple question from an unexperienced Unix user:
How can I exclude certain files, subdirectories from a backup with
vdump. (Under VMS I have two possibilities. 1. set files to
"nobackup" or 2. exclude files with a qualifier in the command
line). I would prefer possibility 1. Reading the vdump man pages I
found no hint.
