[SUMMARY] Remote shell problems

The problem was that the root password on the target servers were either due to
or had expired.
They were probably all set around the same time.
Once they had been reset remote shell started again.

As a point of interest when the same problem occurs on HP-UX you get the
message that the password has expired but
on DU 4.0 you only get 'permission denied' which sounds like a different
problem and, according to the man pages, should
only occur when failing .rhosts verification.

Thanks to those who replied with checking permissions suggestions. I am
including a reply which actually suggests there
may be a problem with a fix.

Are you using the password expiration warning on the 3 alphas
which are reporting the problem?

There is a bug in 4.0D (possible other versions) where rsh'ing into a DU box
running
enhanced security will fail if the password of the account will expire within
the
'd_pw_expire_warning' interval. Compaq has a provisional patch, but the patch
is not
part of any public patchkit yet.
