        The abundance of answers suggested checking that the firmware was
up to date. The machine was already running the 5.6 firmware, so that was
not the issue.

        The second popular suggestion was to ensure that no lingering VMS
console variables were set. After clearing all variables that I wasn't
sure should be set, and setting the few mentioned in the manual, I booted
the machine again and the installation is now working properly.

        There may also have been an issue with the halt button, but I'm
much happier with the it's-VMS-fault explanation :)
