Problems building kernel after installing DEGPA Gigabit Card

Hello Managers,

We attempted to install a DEGPA Gigabit ethernet card into our DS20
running DUNIX 4.0E today and followed the instructions to:

1) boot genvunix
2) log in as root
3) load the driver (# sysconfig -c alt)

Here we'd get the error
framework error: subsystem 'alt' already configured / loaded

I guess that means the driver is already installed, so we proceded

4) rebuild the kernel with all the kernel options (# doconfig)

Then we get the following error:

*** PERFORMING KERNEL BUILD ***

A log file listing special device files is located in /dev/MAKEDEV.log
Makefile:834: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself
(eventually). Stop.

*** WARNING ***
An error has occurred during system configuration. A partial listing
of the error log file (./errs) follows:

Makefile:834: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself
(eventually). Stop.
Press <RETURN> to continue:

I did find the Makefile at one point, but I'm not sure how to correct
it.

Could anyone help with this problem? TIA
