Summary: Firmware upgrade (to 5.7) using floppies from SRM

Dear all,

I was now able to update the firmware on the DS20. Here is what I did:

1. unplug the network cable (seems to matter in some cases)

2. on the SRM:

   set auto_action HALT

(this was set to BOOT and I had to use Ctrl-C to get the console
   prompt)

3. reboot

4. follow the instructions in the 0readme.txt that comes with the
firmware upgrade files. This had to be done several times.

4.1 When the update utility asks for the file name I typed it in
explicitly (just in case). It now loads everything from the two
floppies. However, the 'list' command in the update utility
shows no entry for fsb (probably not surprising) and the last
column ('Update Revision') says 'Missing file' for all items of
devices nt and srm (only the cipca_fw entry says A420). So an
'update srm' command fails of course. When typing 'exit' it
       complains about errors.

4.2 Same procedure as in 4.1, but now the 'Missing file' entries
are gone from the last column for the srm driver. The fsb entry
is still missing and the nt driver complains about 'Missing
file'. But the 'update srm' now works fine.

4.3 Same procedure as in 4.2, but the filename presented by the
update utility as default is for some reason now
'pc264io.txt'. So I typed in pc264fw.txt again. Now the 'list'
command shows an fsb entry (nt still has 'Missing
file'). Update of fsb works fine.

(BTW: the example output in 0readme.txt has DFXAA310, but the 2nd
floppy contains DFXAA320).

I'm not sure what made the difference: maybe the AUTO_ACTION variable,
so that I wasn't using Ctrl-C, or maybe typing 'pc264fw.txt'
explicitely at the prompt. The removal of the network cable alone
didn't make a difference.

So now I will maybe get the Powerstorm 350 get to work ...

Dear all,

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on a DS20 to the latest 5.7. The
'info' command on the SRM console tells me

  AlphaServer DS20 Console T5.4-3
  Qlogic ISP1020 Firmware version 5.57

When I follow the instructions on the Compaq WWW page
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/ds20.html to
update using two floppies the LFU utility start fine - but it stops
(?) when doing the

  Copying pc264fw.txt from dva0. . .

The LED on the floppy is on but nothing happens for over 1 h. This
file is tiny (< 1k) so I can't think of a reason for it to take so
long.

I created the two floppies based on ds20srm.zip and ds20opt.zip under
Linux and Windows NT (in case the unzipping goes wrong) to no avail.

The reason for upgrading the firmware is, that a new Powerstorm 350
card doesn't seem to send a VGA signal when installed. The sheet
coming with it states that the minimum system firmware revision
required is V5.5-82.

Any idea? Should I try a BOOTP upgrade? Or are there any SRM variables
I have to set/unset?
