Summary: Insight Manager Agent for Tru 64 V4.0d

I had asked whether or not I could get Insight Manager to work with V4.0d. My
original question is at the end.

I appreciate the help of:

"David Hull" <David_Hull_at_Jabil.com>
"Andre Bellotti" <aab_at_unx.dec.com>
"Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-884-0646" <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
"Declan Lennon" <declan.lennon_at_onebox.com>
"Davis, Alan" <Davis_at_tessco.com>

All of whom helped. The short answer is that it will work on V4.0d. I had to
do some fiddling around with the files which were installed or (in some cases)
not installed by the setld script. I.e., during the installation process,
some files weren't copied to their destinations and this was reported to
stout. Examination of the .scp file showed that these copies were contingent
upon the OS being "newer" than v4.0d. Further, after proper configuration, the
/var/opt/CPQIM100/bin/cpq_mibs process would not start automatically, so I
started it manually, and have yet to modify /sbin/init.d/insightd to start it
automatically.

I learned the following from specific people who had the following to say:

David:

I'm told this works on 4.0D-E, though the docs clearly say they require F.
Your mileage may vary.

David also included a tarball of CPQIM100 which is what I installed.

Andre:

Although the binaries would work on 4.0D, we're only supporting Tru64 UNIX
4.0f and above. Up until recently, the agents were part of the Operating
System, hence were not provided in a seperate kit. In April this year, we
started to provide the Compaq Managment Agents for Tru64 UNIX of the Compaq
Management CD starting with Ver 4.7. You can update existing Agents (From
4.0F onwards) by installing the updated version provided on that Management
CD. The new version of our agents, V2.0, do provide thresholding and SNMP
traps.
I am working on an external Web Site for making those Agents updates
downloadable from the Web, but you can also subscribe to receive the
Management CDs directly. The site from which customers can subscribe is the
following:
http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/SmartStart/ss_subscription.html

Alan:

In my cursory tests the v4.0f agent does work on v4.0e/d.

Tom Blinn had the wisest advice, convince my customer to bite the bullet now
and upgrade to a common code base which
will be supportable over the long run. For example, V4.0G.

Regards and thanks to all,

Bruce

Original question follows:

The Insight manager agent ships with V4.0f of Tru64.

Has anyone tried it on V4.0d pk2??

I have a customer who has two systems, one with v4.0f and one at v4.0d pk2.
They just got their first Compaq Win/nt server and were "wowed" with being
able to see their HZS70 based storage on the V4.0f box using the Insight
Manager client sw.

I am reluctant to mess with their v4.0d pk2 machine because it is their
production system. (Which is why we've never upgraded the pk level).

On the other hand, they would rather use their Insight manager client
rather than SWCC for the v4.0d machine.

So, has anyone found a kit (is there a kit for v40.d) or does anyone know
if the v4.0f kit will work on v4.0d?

I haven''t a machine to try this on.

Thanks and regards,

Bruce
