Bob Vickers <R.Vickers_at_dcs.rhbnc.ac.uk>
and others whose responses I will probably receive later today...
they both said essential RTFM (the release notes in this case)...
mea culpa, 50 lashes with wet noodle etc...
interestingly while this is covered extensively in the JDK release
notes, its not mentioned at all in the JRE release notes, which
focus abit more on redistribution vs. installation...

ps: still wondering why JRE doesn't have the Coffee Mug logo affixed...

Subject: Java2 and Tru64 V5.0a
Fellow Managers,
I will be installing the Java2 SDK (and possibly the FastVM and plugin)
from
http://www.digital.com/java/alpha/javakits.html on my
newly (re)minted XP1000 running Tru64 V5.0a. I actually had priorly
installed the JRE on a V4.0F system and that install, while successful
left me with one question: the installation (nicely setld'd by the way)
put everything in /usr/opt (as it should) but did *not* replace the
existing prog or libs with symlinks or such. So I'm wondering what
others have done in this area. Is there a reason why the existing
V1.1.blah stuff should not be replaced? Will I have to hardcode
paths etc into any software expecting to find Java2 stuff?
Lend me your thoughts on this topic.
Also, another matter of curiousity: why are all the Tru64 Java2 kits
stamped officially Java Compatible *except* for the JRE? That seems kinda
odd to me...
tia and rgds,
_kelley
