tape drive

Dear Managers:

We have a Digital Alpha running on Digital Unix 3.2D. Our sytem came
preconfigured with an Exabyte EXB-8205XLE tape drive.

We are about to use the Digital Unix ver 3.2 update disk in an attempt
to fix some system errors. ( Yes, we know it is better to get ver 4 or
higher, but we do not have the budget to do so. )

We are afraid that we might lose the configuration done for the tape
drive when we use the update disk.

Our question is, which files are being used by the tape drive to work?

If we are able to identify the files, what are these files? Can we
simply make a copy of the files and restore them later in their proper
directories so that we could use the tape drive after the update ? Do we
need to rebuild the kernel ?

One last thing, does anybody know how to configure an Exabyte
EXB-8205XLE tape drive ( or any unsupported tape drive) on Digital Unix
3.2D? Can you give us a step by step procedure on how to accomplish this
?

We would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you very much
