Password question

I made a terrible mistake this morning and ran convuser on all users in
the system rather than just on a single user as a test case. The end
result being that all users passwords were wiped out including the root
password. I did manage to restore the root partition from backup and
get everything back except that the passwords are still inoperable. I
notice that if I change a users password then they are able to login
again. However I have several hundred accounts that I would have to
change all the passwords on so Im wondering if anyone knows what file I
could restore to get the original passwords back. They have to be
stored in a database somewhere. Any help appreciated...
